The Art of Gold Thread

My fourth sample frame focused on goldwork embroidery, a technique I have had previously explored in smaller classes with Hand and Lock and with a private tutor, Margot Merendino in Perth, Western Australia. I thoroughly enjoy the precision and attention to detail it requires, as well as its rich, regal history, often created for Monarchy, which brings a distinctive atmosphere to the classes and our embroidery work.

The process:

We learnt a range of goldwork techniques, starting with different padding methods such as felt, soft string, and hard string padding, followed by couching styles including mixed, angled, and circular, as well as pearl purl borders. We then progressed to basket weave, Or Nué, and finally cutwork and chipping techniques.

My Final Motif

My final motif was adapted to incorporate these methods, dividing the original design into sections to showcase multiple techniques effectively.
